Storm Alerts Across Uttarakhand: IMD Issues Orange & Yellow Warnings

Dehradun, May 27, 2026: Relief from the scorching heat is expected in Uttarakhand, but residents are being warned to prepare for severe weather conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dehradun, has forecast rain, thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and strong winds across various districts of the state over the next few days.

An orange alert has been issued for May 28 in the districts of Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. These areas are likely to experience lightning accompanied by thunder, hailstorms, and winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour, with gusts up to 60 kilometres per hour. The remaining districts of the state are also expected to witness thunderstorms and strong winds during this period.

On May 29, the orange alert will extend to Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. The forecast warns of thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and winds of similar intensity, along with heavy rainfall at isolated places in Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli.

For May 30 and 31, the IMD has issued a yellow alert, indicating continued thunderstorms and strong winds, though less severe than the preceding days.

In response, the State Emergency Operations Center has directed all concerned districts to remain vigilant and ensure precautionary measures are in place. Disaster management departments have been instructed to maintain special vigilance in sensitive areas, keep teams on alert, and prepare necessary resources for immediate action.

Secretary of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, Vinod Kumar Suman, has appealed to residents to avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather, remain in safe places, and stay away from trees, power poles, and weak structures during lightning and strong winds. He further urged the public to follow the latest weather information and guidelines issued by the administration.

Authorities emphasise that public safety remains the top priority as Uttarakhand braces for volatile weather conditions in the days ahead.
